The line runs 17.7 km from Tatsuno Station, the gateway to Aso, to Takamori Station. the line was severely damaged by the Kumamoto Earthquake in April 2016, and was temporarily shut down. However, the 10.6-km section between Nakamatsu and Tatsuno Stations is still inoperable due to the inflow of earth and sand for approximately 250 meters and extensive damage to the tunnels and railway bridges. Thanks to the warm support and assistance from all over Japan, the entire line will be restored in the summer of 2023.
