IR Ishikawa Railway is a third-sector railroad company established in August 2012, funded by Ishikawa Prefecture, cities and towns in the prefecture, and local companies, etc. It took over the railroad business between Kanazawa and Kutsukura on the JR Hokuriku Main Line when the Hokuriku Shinkansen Line opened in Kanazawa on March 14, 2015. The 521 Series trains (five trains) owned by the company are accented with one of the five Kaga colors (red, yellow, green, purple, and navy blue) for each train. The company name was chosen from among many publicly solicited proposals and is named from the initials of "Ishikawa Railway. The line is scheduled to be extended west of Kanazawa in the spring of 2024.
