Yamagata Railway is a 30.5-kilometer railroad line that opened on October 25, 1988. The company was established with investments from the prefecture, four municipalities along the line, surrounding municipalities, private organizations, companies, and individuals. There are four high schools and one vocational school along the line, and many high schools along the JR line, which connects to the Nagai Line, and more than 70% of the passengers are high school students. The train connects with the JR line at Akayu and Imaizumi, making 12 round trips per day according to the schedule of these connections and the time of arrival and departure from each high school. In 2008, the station introduced a separate upper and lower train system, and is working on its own measures to increase revenues by introducing event trains such as the wine train and the local sake train, in addition to goods such as Mocchii the rabbit stationmaster, advertising revenue, and suspension leather ownership.
