"Sanriku Railway started operation in April 1984 as Japan's first third-sector railroad company, with the Minami Rias Line between Mori Station and Kamaishi Station and the Kita Rias Line between Miyako Station and Kuji Station. Although the line was severely damaged by the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, it resumed full operation in April 2014 with much support from Japan and abroad. In March 2019, the JR Yamada Line between Kamaishi Station and Miyako Station was transferred to the new line, which became the longest third-sector railroad in Japan at 163 km, the ""Sanriku Railway Rias Line,"" connecting Mori Station to Kuji Station in a single line.
