The line connects Hakodate, the main city for sightseeing in southern Hokkaido, to Hokuto City, home of the Trappist Monastery, and then to Kikonai, Hokkaido's southernmost Shinkansen station, making it an attractive route for sightseeing in southern Hokkaido. From the train windows, passengers can see Mount Hakodate floating on the sea and the Tsugaru Straits. The night view is especially attractive during the squid fishing season from June to December, when the "isaribi" (fishing fires) are lit. The train windows are also decorated with colorful seasonal flowers such as cherry blossoms, tulips, lawn cherry blossoms, and sunflowers.
